One of the greatest surprises during the 2021 PlayStation Showcase was the reveal of Marvel's Wolverine, a project in development by Insomniac Games. That's right, the studio is juggling Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and this game simultaneously, which just goes to show how impressive the team is. This one is even earlier in development than Spider-Man 2, and doesn't have a release window just yet. It's unclear if it will tie to the Spider-Man games, or if it will be its own separate story — though, we're inclined to believe they'll be connected. The reveal trailer doesn't give us a glimpse of gameplay, but we can probably expect it to be a third-person action adventure, with a large open world to explore. What we do know is that you'll need a PS5 to play this one when it comes out.
Want to know when you can play the year's best upcoming video games? Lucky for you, we've rounded up all the biggest video game release dates of 2021 into one handy calendar. Whether you play on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, or Nintendo Switch, there are a lot of titles on the way to each platform this year in the form of brand-new releases, classic re-releases, ports, and DLC. Initially called Project Athia, Forspoken is an upcoming action RPG title developed by Luminous Productions. The game is scheduled to release in 2022 for PS5 and Microsoft Windows. In the "narrative-driven adventure," you'll play as Frey Holland, who has to survive in a dangerous, yet beautiful world using her magical abilities.
As of now, it's unclear if the game would be available on the Xbox console. However, in terms of video game consoles, only PS5 owners would enjoy the game. Elden Ring is one of the most-anticipated games, largely due to its developer, FromSoftware — who you might know as the team behind Dark Souls and Bloodborne. This game was first revealed at E and wasn't shown off again for quite some time.
A new trailer was finally unveiled in the summer of 2021, showing off some more of the open world and even featuring a release date. We know it's an action RPG set in an open world and is a collaboration between FromSoftware andauthor George R. R. Martin. It'll be reminiscent of the Souls games, but with many new ideas, such as horseback riding.
Though much of this game's DNA is rooted in the Souls franchise, it will play differently, due to the open world. The Souls games have always been slightly open-ended in their design, but never quite featured an open world. Since its debut in 1994, the KOF fighting game series has been driving the world to excitement with its appealing characters and unique game system. There are also a variety of battle options that allow you to choose how you want to play!

Far Cry fans are getting the sixth mainline installment release this year. Set on a fictional Caribbean island called Yara, the game centers on a dictator, El Presidente Anton Castillo. Players are stepping into the role of a guerrilla fighter that seems reluctant to take on the battle, Dani Rojas.
However, forced into the fight, Dani begins their journey in overthrowing the regime. Like with past Far Cry games, you can expect plenty of characters to meet and wildlife as well. We're still waiting on the game, but so far, we do know that this installment will be the most extensive map in the franchise. Fortunately, because you are a guerrilla fighter, Dani can blend in as a typical average citizen. If you holster your weapon, guards might not take much care of you in the open. This could also mean the ability to explore this large open world map without the worry of jumping right into battle.
One of the finest and most challenging games on PS3 returns with a fantastic ground-up remake in the form of the PS5's Demon's Souls from Bluepoint Games and SIE Japan Studio. It debuted as a launch title for eager PS5 owners, featuring new rings, armor, weapons, and items called "Grains" that grant temporary resistance to effects like poison or bleeding. This video game brought out the same gameplay style as the original Subnautica title but with some new twists. In this game, players are going through the arctic region of Planet 4546B as you set out to investigate what happened to your sister.
If you played the past game, then you can expect more biomes although a smaller map. Still, there's plenty to explore, and as you roam around, you'll find that there's not much in terms of empty locations. Overall this is still a survival game, so you'll need to gather resources to ensure your survival.
As a result, you'll need to explore icy caves, snowy peaks, and the ocean depths below. Although, you'll still have to be wary of the hostile alien creatures that roam around the area. Overall the premise is set in an alternate world where massive mutated monsters have sprung up. Fortunately, there is a military unit that has supernatural powers.
So players are not only skilled in combat, but they'll have the abilities like psychokinesis to launch objects at targets. Then to top it off, there are additional party members that join in with their unique abilities which you can start to string a series of attacks or strategies to take out an enemy. They are large enough to roam around, but unfortunately, it's not an actual open-world experience. Still, I think you can get quite a bit of enjoyment of this title. Everyone was talking about Valheim, which was developed by a five-person team, Iron Gate Studio.
Here the premise is that Vikings that perish in life, such as the character you'll be taking on, get sent to Valheim. It's here that you'll prove worthy of passing on to the halls of Valhalla. However, to do that, you'll need to take on the different enemies that roam the lands. Similar to other survival games, players will have to craft up items and hunt down food.
There is cooperative gameplay and some PvP, but again this is not a complete game. You'll find that there will be updates as developers continue to finish the project. In the video game industry, 2021 is expected to see the release of many new video games. The numerous delays in software and hardware releases due to the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic has heavily impacted development schedules, leading to many games being delayed into this year or indefinitely. Additionally, computer and console hardware was impacted by the combined effects of semiconductor shortage (partially from post-COVID-19 effects) and a rising growth of bitcoin mining that strained the supply of critical components.
The next game in Electronic Arts' acclaimed shooter series is called Battlefield 2042. The long-awaited title is finally in development and will be landing on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles around holiday 2021. Instead, its narrative will be told through the multiplayer mode, which will evolve over time. This excludes games without release dates that may have been previously announced — like Elder Scrolls VI and the Fable reboot, for example — and any games that were released for either console in 2020, including launch titles.
We've also chosen only to list release dates for games where the publisher has chosen a concrete date with both day and month. 2020 was quite a unique year with this coronavirus health pandemic outbreak. It caused so many development studios to shut their doors and work remotely. As a result, some games got pushed back so we're expecting 2021 to be quite filled with new exciting video games. Likewise, with the latest generation platforms available, there's bound to be some titles well worth purchasing for the new console hardware. With all that said, Hogwarts Legacy is a game we were looking to come out this year but that's been delayed into 2022.
PlayStation 5 is definitely the most talked-about video game console in 2021. Of course, the gaming community is talking about it because of the console's shortage in the global market. However, the other reason why PS5 is at the top of the hype graph is because of all the amazing upcoming PS5 exclusive games. Gran Turismo 7 is the next entry in the popular racing series built from the ground-up for PS5, to take advantage of all the hardware features the console offers.
With a full campaign mode, livery editor, a collection of legendary circuits and multiplayer, the package Polyphony Digital are offering is a complete one for fans of the franchise. Coming from Hitman developer IO Interactive, the team is now working on a James Bond game under the working title Project 007. It will be an original story with a new Bond character, divorced from any of the likenesses of previous actors.
The team expects this to be part of a trilogy of games, though not much else is known about the project. Much like a lot of the games on this list, Project 007 likely won't launch for a few years. The expectations for WWE 2K22 are through the roof considering it will have been the first new entry in the series in over two years. Following the departure of longtime WWE developer Yuke's, 2K had to shift production to Visual Concepts.
The team is apparently revamping a lot of the gameplay in WWE 2K22, including updated controls and a rebuilt engine. Interestingly, it's slated for a March 2022 release window, which is unusual since the WWE 2K games typically launch in the fall. The popular racing game is coming back in a big way, and the developer says players will be thrilled to get their hands on the redesigned campaign mode. The trailer gave us a glimpse of something called GT Town, which seemed to provide a robust roadmap for planning out your life as a racer. Sony said they were working on fancy audio tricks for this presentation, and it showed — viewers could feel every gear shift, thanks to some impressive audio engineering.
Couple that with the new DualSense controller, and we're looking at one of the most sensory-intensive racing sims ever made. During the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, Gran Turismo 7's release date was revealed, along with a fancy new trailer. An enhanced version of Hideo Kojima's latest game is on the way to PS5. Death Stranding Director's Cutincludes improved combat, quality of life changes, and even a new racing mode, which is just as wacky as you'd imagine. In addition to the improvements, Director's Cut also features a new companion named Buddy Bot, which helps Sam Porter Bridges carry larger hauls.
Death Stranding is not for everyone, but is certainly a unique experience. Now PS5 users will be able to play it natively on Sony's new machine. The latest entry in the Call of Duty series is just as explosive as ever. The single-player campaign is akin to watching an action-packed Hollywood blockbuster, as it's set during the Cold War in the '80s.
It follows a group of agents assigned to follow an individual known as Qasim Javadi and Arash Kadivar for their participation in the Iran hostage crisis. It turns out that a "Perseus" was responsible for making the crisis happen before he was executed. President Ronald Reagan organizes a task force with black ops to find Perseus, including an agent known as "Bell" that players take on the role of. As Bell, a story unfolds that shifts into trippy, Jacob's Ladder-like territory for one of the most engrossing Call of Duty stories in years.
The next mainline game in the storied Final Fantasy series will be a console exclusive for the PS5, at least for some time, and the first trailer looks absolutely great. It's a return to a more tied-down fantasy realm, along with a grittier style and a combat system that looks more responsive than ever. Yes, a new God of War game is happening and it's set to land on the PS5 at some point in 2022. During the latest PlayStation September 2021 showcase, we got a proper look at Kratos' upcoming return, and boy was it quite the trailer. Showing a slightly older Atreus, we got to see a host of different creatures, some helpings of combat, and some new characters we'll meet.
In a blog post, Santa Monica Studio revealed that the realms are harsher, and we'll be able to test our fighting prowess against new creatures from Norse mythology. It was also revealed that Cory Barlog is not directing this time around, with Eric Williams taking up the helm. From the developer behind Hyper Light Drifter, Solar Ash is Heart Machine's latest upcoming game to be announced as part of the PS5 lineup. With its distinct colourful art style, players will journey through a rift in space known as the Ultravoid which is swallowing whole worlds. As you can see, Sony's latest console has a diverse range of new games, including some PS5 exclusives. While some of these games don't yet have a release date, there are certainly plenty of future releases to keep on your radar.
Combine this little lot with all the best PS5 games so far, the PS5 launch games and some free PS5 upgrades for PS4 titles, and there are some excellent experiences to have on Sony's latest console. How many of you expected the next Forza game to be the Forza Motorsport installment? Instead, we got a bit of a surprise when Forza Horizon 5 came out. This is a racing game series, but it blends simulation and arcade-style racing a bit together. It's easy to get the controls and figure out just how to race around the tracks.
Likewise, the games feature some rather significant and impressive maps to race around in. When it comes to Forza Horizon 5 from Playground Games, we're getting tossed into an open-world based around Mexico. As a result, this means having quite a diverse set of environments to travel around in.
These could range from an active volcano, jungle, beaches to cities, just to name a few areas. That should mean a relatively large map this time around and even dynamic weather systems. You'll have anything from dust to tropical storms rolling in, which should play a role in driving conditions.
Unfortunately, the timed-exclusive Final Fantasy XVI doesn't have an exact release date yet, but we do have good news. The game's official PlayStation Store page recently switched from TBC to Coming Soon. Nevertheless, the game promises to fix many issues from previous installments and includes a real-time combat system that looks promising. Combine that with its compelling story, and we have one of the best upcoming PS5 games. Quite possibly the worst-kept secret in gaming for a number of years, Bluepoint Game's remake of From Software's brutal challenge is a triumph. If you played the original from 2009, the glorious art and unique gameplay was sometimes tanked by a technical performance that was quite clearly heaving against the limit of budget, hardware and its own ambition.
Bluepoint has wisely kept their remake as faithful as possible, while updating what didn't work, and elevating the original artistic intentions with a depth and detail that simply weren't possible on PS3. Just don't expect it to be any easier now that it runs more smoothly. It's 2021, which means it's high time for video games to feature more strong female protagonists. Nara is on the run in her stealth spaceship from a cult, and from the trailer alone, this space-shooter title promises to be action packed. With the COVID-19 pandemic leaving many people with more free time than they've experienced in a long while, video games became a comfort and distraction in new magnitudes this past year. Zero Dawn was one of the masterpiece video games that was PS4 exclusive for a long time until it was released for PC.
