You know I would say 40 mm is a watch that tries to be a gadget. 44 is a gadget that tries to be a watch. Eventually I do not regret that I have bought 44mm although I had a lot of doubts.

40mm looks better aesthetically on your wrist. It's only a 2mm difference in size, doesn't really Impact the screens usefulness or readibility. The only real negative with the smaller watch is the lower battery life. I'm a man with small hands and wrists, so it fits more like a watch (vs a wrist-computer). I spent a full 2 weeks trying out both and stressing over it.

The extra screen real estate was nice, but once I learned how to work the watch, I knew where to look and what to tap, so I haven't minded the smaller size. It's also noticeably lighter and bumps into my wrist less when I move, so it's much more comfortable on me. But that's just what fit my wrist best.
